Update – All Systems Normal!

• (11:20 Friday) Systems are working normally since yesterday. Your email program may need you to enter your password again to continue. If that doesn’t work try it using webmail, or call our office for troubleshooting assistance.
• (07:00 Thursday) Upgrades and maintenance were completed early this morning. Performance has been stable and normal for the past 3 hours.
• (10:20 Wednesday) We are experiencing higher than normal loads on our main mail and web hosting server. This was causing delays accessing and sending mail. Our technicians are working to address the problem in conjunction with staff at our data centre provider. Some upgrades were performed Tuesday night to add additional resources to one of the systems, this should help with stability.

Senior staff will be reviewing internal procedures and working with our data centre provider to prevent further problems and improve response time in the future.

I recently received the following email from Tom Thomson of the Nelson Chamber of Commerce, and I am re-posting it for the interest of Secure by Design customers:

The City of Nelson has recently completed electric service upgrades to the downtown core of Nelson. This also involved laying fiber optic cable that allowed the City to connect local government buildings:

• White Building
• Nelson Library and Police Station building
• Nelson and Area Recreation Complex
• Regional District of Central Kootenay Building

Given that this fiber infrastructure is in place within the downtown core of Nelson, the Nelson and Area Economic Development Partnership (NAEDP) has embarked on a strategy to stimulate further economic development for the community. The NAEDP will focus on how this project can maximize the economic benefit to Nelson and Area businesses.

The Chamber on behalf of The Nelson and Area Economic Development Partnership recently completed five focus groups sessions with businesses in the downtown core of Nelson. These focus group sessions included small business owners and managers from various business sectors — medical, tourism, retail, education, services, manufacturing, professional and technology. The focus group research effort is designed to help assess demand, evaluate knowledge and determine technology interests/needs among local businesses.

Secure by Design is pleased to announce the availability of high speed Internet on parts of the 399 telephone exchange, covering the Thrums area. The service connects over your phone line at speeds up to 6mbps, many times faster than standard dial-up. Since it uses a land line, our service is not affected by radio interference or weather related problems. You can also use the phone and the Internet at the same time!

You’ll also need an ADSL modem or gateway. We have modems available for $50 + tax, and wireless gateways for $99 + tax. This is a special introductory price for customers that upgrade from our dial-up plans.

This Saturday, June 29th from 5am to 6am, we will be carrying out some important maintenance on our server infrastructure.  This maintenance cycle will require a system reboot, which will interrupt most services including hosted web sites and email accounts. We anticipate a service outage lasting between 10 to 20 minutes.

Senior technical staff and vendor support will be carrying out the work to ensure that the maintenance is as non-intrusive as possible.

Our office will be closed for the Victoria Day long weekend, including Monday, May 20th.

Our technical staff are available to respond to all system-wide emergencies.
